[Octopus]: Baby Kraken!

Baby Kraken (O.briareus) was hunting in his reef garden last night, and I caught some video using a flashlight. Watch how at 58 seconds in, its eyes are focused on me, but it’s arms find two hermit crab shells then discards them after realizing they are empty. As he moves away along the surface of the glass (1:48) notice that the tip of one of its arms is missing. That will grow back quickly on its own and will be fun for us all to observe! Notice it’s natural hunting coloration of dark red head and bluish white arms and webbing at the end of the video. Classic briareus!

Photo shoot! Got some amazing bonding time with my Baby Kraken last night! We made “First Contact,” the first time it touched me. I put my fingers in the tank and it gingerly approached. It shyly extended one arm, ever so lightly touched my finger- and then grab my entire hand and tried to play in the tank! 🤣. I am absolutely captivated by this baby!
Sedna, this is amazing footage of your baby. How do you ever get any sleep? I think I would want to spend every waking hour watching every new behavior, and bonding with this incredible creature. You are so fortunate to have this experience, and thank you for sharing it.

I’m so glad you enjoy my octo-adventures! It is hard to go to bed some nights, and sometimes I do actually get distracted by the octopus and don’t get all my stuff done. I’m SO lucky to have gotten a healthy one so young, I’m hoping that we get a year together!

More nighttime photos shot by the glow of a flashlight!

As a response to the many questions I get on Facebook about the bright iridescent blue the Baby Kraken so often displays, I took a series of photos to demonstrate the way the colors look different as a result of the angle the light hits iridiphores.

I was able to make these three compilation pictures- where each of the photos on the left show the light hitting the iridiphores straight on. The photos on the right are lit from the top down.

That really does make a remarkable difference. He sure looks good and happy. I guess it's still unknown between Kraken and Krakenette?? Iguess it's pretty difficult since it looks like said tiny octo is almost always moving around. I sure do love seeing 'it' so often. It is such a thrill and delight to watch it develop and show it's personality. 😃🐙

Play time! After dark thus little one is ready to play! It’s very gentle, it pulls- but not too insistently. I get the sense that it would like to explore my hand more, but at the moment it’s too shy for much more than a sucker grab. I’m ecstatic!

If that's not one of the most adorable things ❤. It looks like it should be the most delightful of tiny little touches. Do you feel it's wee little suckers at all? If so, can you describe the feeling ? It is still so very petite, i'm only really aware of just how bitty when there is your finger in the shot. I am so pleased for you both! Do your non-octo friends understand what a big deal sharing habitat with such a remarkable little (dare i say it!) alien?? Wait, do you HAVE any non-octo friends? 😂 When i showed dogs for all of those years, i forgot how to interact with non-show doggy people. Thanks for posting these photos! And, as always, thanks for sharing little "Whozit" 💕💕

I just remembered a question i wanted to ask the last few times but forgot (happens a lot lately 🙄). Do you find that Briareus spend more time on their glass than other species? It just seems to me they are always dancing or posing or just showing off on the glass walls and it's maybe more than others. Just curious, thank you as always! Oh yeah, one more 😋. Whay is your avatar photo? I have been trying to figure it out so i'm not always bugging you, but i simply hace come up blank every time. OK, now i'm finished 😁 TY!!

I’m frequently asked about my set up, so I made this video to share. It’s a 21 year old tank- so there are a few scratches and imperfections, but after that long, it’s an animal of its own kind!
