Is a filter sponge the key so that a cuttlefish or octopus don't get sucked up into the filter or powerhead? If so, where can I get one?
Thanks.

There are also various power head intake strainers, or you can make one yourself. Got to you LFS and browse the shelves for options. The 'filter sponges' are available there as well, and do make good protection.
