There isn't probably much else that you could have done under the circumstances. You can't treat something if you don't know what it is you are treating and there is still so much to learn about octopuses in captivity.
Octopuses live fast explosive lives and when the end comes it's fast and often catches people by surprise. Personally I haven't kept cephalopods for nearly 3 years and I guess that's one reason why.
