I guess it depends on where you live and how hot it gets. I control mine during hot days with a small fan and putting powerheads (used for flow only) on timers.

The fan brings my temp down 4-5 degrees. (Total water volume 80 gallons)

My maxijet 1200 on a timer activating it for 20 minutes every 2 hours brings the temp down another 3 degrees.
