In the Atlantic from Long Island to southern Brazil and from southern part of the North Sea to the Cape of Good Hope; common in Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean and Mediterranean Seas, found also near oceanic islands. Whole shelf, sometimes upper part of slope but usually in coastal shallows.'
