Does a bored octopus die?

Just a few days ago I was on the phone with a sellor from the seawater section of a pet shop. He said that when an octopus is bored or simply doesn't like the surroundings it may die. Is that correct?
Could you name me the main reasons and mistakes to be made that makes an octopus die, please?

I am not sure about an octopus dying directly from being bored and water quality and stress free housing (which includes hiding places where the keeper cannot see the animal) are more likely the biggest issues with health.
