The red octopus, once thought to be a juvenile GPO. So i was going to the place i volunteer yesterday. (i volunteer at MSI.(marine science institute)) I got there and my job was to check on the octos. I saw they had a new one there. They told me it was a red octopus. I said i have never heard of them. So it was always thought it was a juvenile GPO, but it is actually a different species. Its found on the california coast. Sam spots as bimacs. Has any one heard of this kind?

A red octopus is Octopus rubescens but they shouldn't have eyespots, I don't think. They don't show up in the pet trade, but several researchers have worked with them, including Neogonodactylus (Roy) and Taollan.

Roy has noted that they are one of his favorites and, at one point, it seemed that any the might have made it into the pet trade were scarfed up by a certain Doctor. They absolutely require a chiller though and Roy suggests that they bite more readily than other species.

I the spot was a typo i meant they live in the same spot as the bimac. I say that they had a dark brown to black ring around there eye. How big do they get?

I am going to write up a how to guide on using advanced search - as soon as I can come up with a good set of rules :wink2:

As Monty mentioned, none have shown up for a long time but

here is an older discussion on the rubecens.

For other discussions, try rubecens as the keyword in the advance search and select posts (not threads) at the bottom. If you get too many that don't interest you, add Neogonodactylus as the poster.
