My first ceph tank.

Well, I have a Vulgaris. It's smaller than I expected, but looks very healthy and lively. I hope all goes well and it thrives and grows.

wow!! Exciting days ahead for sure -- best of luck; we'll be following all developments!

Great pics!

@Kchristensen8064 , is there a chance this is O. mercatoris or joubini? Been a while since I've seen a young vulgaris (although technically caribbean vulgaris have been reclassified as O. insualris or O. americanus -- two distinct species), but I recall there being more obvious development of trellis structures on the mantle. Trellis refers to the mottling patterns that form roundish patterns on the skin of many octopus, especially those in the vulgaris species complex.

I'm glad you shared that, Connor - fwiw (not much generally, which is why I didnt chime in with it!), I also thought that mantle looked like something other than vulgaris.

You are correct, after letting it settle in and being able to observe more I do believe that I received a Mercatoris. I have reached out to the company that I bought it from to see if anything can be done, doesn't make much since having a dwarf octo in such a large tank. Fortunatly I do have the ability to keep the Merc in a different system that is better suited if I need to.

Awww I hope it’s a female and carrying a sperm packet (if you decide to keep it)! And hopefully you can find an actual vulgaris!

Yeah if it keeps doing the two arms curled in front pose (I think of it as a put em up pose), it’s a merc and I can also see some of the star points around its eyes

The star points were the final determining factor this morning when I saw it. The seller is working on trying to get me a Vulgaris. All of this said if anyone is interested in a Merc I would be happy to ship it. If not then I am happy to keep it as well, although the wife might loose her eyes in the back of her head when I have to make a new home, fortunately I have plenty of well established rock, sand, and everything else to avoid having to cycle anything. Here's a picture from this morning where the stars around the eyes are very prominent.
