As of right now, I have one 55-gallon tank (was sold to me claiming to be a 65-gallon tank, but I did some calculations, and it is probably a 55-gallon tank!) that houses 2 common clowns and a Valentini puffer. It is filtered by an Emperor 400 hang-on filter and an FX4 canister filter. It houses live rock and supposedly live sand (I'm not sure it is though). I have no corals, I didn't really have any interest in corals, so its really just the fish in there.
The plan for my octopus tank is to drill either 1 or 2 grated overflows into another 55-gallon tank that I got from my aunt and uncle. Those will lead into hoses that will lead into a sump that houses a protein skimmer and heater at first, but will eventually have a refugium and some filter media called K-1. We will also potentially have an auto top-off system that is hooked up to a constant supply of RODI water from one of my house pipes. The baffles will be made out of aquamesh instead of the standard glass to save some money. Instead of the standard return pump, I was going to have my FX4 suck water out of the return and run a hose up to the outlet and back into the tank. The tank will have a plexiglass lid that is cut to fit tightly to the tank's dimensions. The tank will have a two-inch sand bed and sufficient amounts of live rock for extra filtration and hiding places. The only escape routes should be the overflow and the outlet, which will both be grated off with sufficiently-sized mesh to prevent escape attempts.
If anyone sees any issues or hiccups in my plan, please let me know. I would love to hear them!
