I have to admit I don't spend too much time noticing cuttlefish pupils, but this one seems to have a very interesting structure. Has anyone seen an eye like this before?
This is an undescribed cuttlefish (about 2.5cm) on Mutus Island, Raja Ampat.
I am useless here of course but always enjoy your posts that encourage looking for species diagnostics. I noticed not only the very unusual shape of the pupil but also the very feminine looking "eye lash" look below the eye. Interesting indeed!
Yeah this is an especially cute cuttlefish (and I'm about the last person in the world to call things cute). I'm also intrigued by the star around the eye- something we're used to seeing in abdopus/cyanea. Yet another animal to throw off the trend of nocturnal species having less complex skin.
