ok, so i know there deadly but i want one. I know they have a short lifespan. i've come to gripps with all this. i have a tank ready for one but i don't know enough about them, like what temp they like, when there most active (day or night). any help you can provide would be great.

Hmmmm.....I think your just fishing but if your not...go here

Well, actually the commonly live in the Pacific ocean's tide pools in warm water conditions, thay are resistant to salinity and temperature changes. They mainly feed on living crustaceans (shrimp and crabs the best). Be really carefull with the bite.

Reeflover what species are you getting ? the greater or lesser ? ill get back to your email overt the next 24 hours when i get a chance :)

well others might correct me but from my understanding the greater is a tropical the lesser temperate

depending on your location in the world and what equipment you have available you may not have a choice on which one will suit you best :)

how are you planning on acquiring one ?

I've kept several in the past. Personally, I think going with another species of octopus is probably a better idea. Blue rings tend to be rather shy and not as fun to have (toying around with stuff, etc) as others.

Agreed also not a good idea in anything but a species only tank with minimal decorations .. you wanna be able to see exactly where it is at all times ... safety feature number 1 :) will list what precautions i take at home and work when i get online later

ran out of time tonight but will get to ya over the weekend but for now need some back ground info

what is your local climate like ? do ya have a chiller or are you willing to get one ?

which blue ring is your lfs store offering ?

what tank size / design are you planning on using ?

do you have any mammal pets or any children in the house or that visit ?

you will wanna set up a reverse light cycle tank if you wanna see it during the day mine will only come out if he hasnt been fed for a few days to get a crab but at night he loves to venture round his tank :)

I'm not aware of non european laws, but concerning France ( for your information)
this species Hapalochlaena maculosa is in the list of non domestic animals authorized under conditions:

"with obligation of marking or not, only within an establishment of breeding or presentation(display) to the public of animals of not domestic species authorized according to articles L. 413-2 and L. 413-3 of the code of the environment to detain animals of the considered species"

This list include numerous species , dangerous or not. This is a recent law ( 2004) in response of "exotics pets" detentions increase ( terrestrial, aquatic or amphibious). Most of the venimous species are forbidden for individual persons. Of course there is more and more smuggling concerning exotics pets. A lot of non venimous are authorized but you need official authorization ( and sometime training probes).

so nobody has the right ( in France) to detend blue ring octopus except some establishment ( and sometimes rare persons but with autorizations, most of them are professionals) and they must be declared to veterinary services and the prefecture.

There are import laws here on certain land animals but almost none on aquatics. A recent federal law was defeated because it would have virtually eliminated all imports of most animals (aquatic and land) for the United States. Here, each state (province) makes its own laws for what animals may not be allowed but there is little federal (for all the states) regulation. We will likely have much greater restrictions in the coming years but the law that failed would have had severe impact on many industries without reasonable consideration given for individual species.

I understand this point of view, know in France smuggling is common to dodge legal restrictions. It is a black market activity. And of course there is more an more person with exotics pets in luggage when they're back from holliday.

The facts are that there was in the past two types of certifications: one for individuals persons who wanted keep species for personnals purpose and another for private or public establishments.

Know only the last is still existing ( only with options). So if you are a simple person, you have to prepare a "profesionnal like" file to authorities !
This include administrative file and marking for the species, and habitat description.

The list evolve constantly and some authorized species are not authorized anymore. If you can prove the Date purchase you are tolerated under conditions(my frogs are in this situation). Actually even veterinary services dissuade persons to present administrative file to settle the situation. But you are not authorized to permit breeding.

Recently to help customers, some exotic pets shops provide training to them to help them to present administrative file to veterinary services. If you are a former biologist ( like me) or veterinary, all trainging can be used to Strengthen the file.

But there is a general case in France, if exotics species can be authorized ( with detention certificate or not). In the facts, most of the venimous species are authorized only for professionnal purpose.

so has reeflover given up or charged in to getting one and been bitten ? i would give a list of recommendations on keeping one but dont want anyone to assume for a second that its a safe thing to do

Dear Reeflover,

I must say that I find them very fascinating. Beautiful - but can be deadly. Although I respect your wishes, I must admit that they do not exist on my wishing list. Like Cthulhu emplied, why not go for the more playful species? Species that you can interact and play with? Without having a paramedic standing by.

It would be like eating a strong sleeping pill, a minute before the doorbell rings and a Victorias Secret model asks if she can spend the night.
