Is the strange looking dark, bubbly patch above the eyes an artifact from preservation or something else?

The animal is alive. This species seems to have a nobbly head.

@Neogonodactylus, I thought it strange for you to post a dead animal but the color and pose made me think it was not only dead but preserved

Thanks for sharing these great pics! I will promote. Side note, I had to change the thumbnail to get it to display. I'll report the bug... seems there may be a problem generating thumbnails for very large images.
