Jun 18, 2014 at 9:01 PM - neurobadger: not keratin, chitin
Jun 18, 2014 at 9:01 PM - neurobadger: chitin is made of carbohydrates. keratin is only found in mammals
Jun 18, 2014 at 9:04 PM - Nancy: Ah, makes more sense. Chitin is found in the outer skeletons of some invertebrates, including marine invertebrates, right?
Jun 18, 2014 at 9:06 PM - neurobadger: yes
Jun 18, 2014 at 9:06 PM - neurobadger: most notably insects
Jun 18, 2014 at 9:06 PM - neurobadger: the chitin is often strengthened with calcium carbonate
Jun 18, 2014 at 9:07 PM - neurobadger: wait, keratin is found in all sorts of vertebrates, not just mammals
Jun 18, 2014 at 9:08 PM - neurobadger: but keratin is solely in vertebrates.
Jun 18, 2014 at 9:13 PM - Nancy: Thanks for the explanation.
Jun 18, 2014 at 9:14 PM - Nancy: Where is everyone.
Jun 18, 2014 at 9:18 PM - DWhatley: Trying to snap still photos

Jun 18, 2014 at 9:24 PM - neurobadger: crikey that's a huge spermatophore!
Jun 18, 2014 at 9:26 PM - neurobadger: 'if spermatangia are found inside the mantle cavity of a male giant squid, could that be the squid's own spermatophores that accidentally implanted themselves?' Ohhhh no, probably not. Down in the deep there they probably don't come across members of their species that often...
Jun 18, 2014 at 9:26 PM - neurobadger: i think Discoteuthis actually uses that strategy
Jun 18, 2014 at 9:26 PM - neurobadger: it impregnates pretty much anything it can find
Jun 18, 2014 at 9:27 PM - neurobadger: i forget if that was discoteuthis or another deep-sea squid, actually
Jun 18, 2014 at 9:28 PM - neurobadger: big ol' ink sac
Jun 18, 2014 at 9:28 PM - Nancy: Well, I'm off for a whirl...

Jun 18, 2014 at 10:35 PM - DWhatley: @CRW I definitely remember meeting Heather. I believe she and your son escaped the oldies a bit for some more youthful conversation.

Jun 18, 2014 at 11:00 PM - neurobadger: holy crud, i just saw a crane fly on my night table with all but one of its legs picked off and nobody in my house did it... there was a pint-sized battle in my room last night

Jun 18, 2014 at 11:14 PM - Nancy: Guess this latest visit is TOO late.

DWhatley: For @tonmo, Kat mentioned that MABRI is testing the one ring a day theory for aging with the deep sea squid

DWhatley: @tonmo, Kat sliced into the brain to show how the esophagus passes through the middles of the brain
Thanks @DWhatley! Cool, I'll need to look it up. And it's good to know that although the tagging feature doesn't work in the live chat room, you DO get the notification when Octobot posts the Chat Archives. My email said Octobot tagged me in a post... helpful!

Jun 19, 2014 at 12:12 AM - DWhatley: @neurobadger, During TONMOcon V the consensus was to have it on the East Coast, following our East/West coast accidental tradition. This was taking into consideration that the Tentacles exhibit would still be there for Tcon VII. The official announcement for the planned length of the exhibit, however, was only for 5 years so there is some thought about changing the destination.

@tonmo, I noticed the tagging did not work but used it anyway knowing individuals would be reading through the posts and should notice the indent. Facebook has started acknowledging the @ sign now too so it is becoming enough of a standard for response even if the software does not fully support the features.

Jul 2, 2014 8:30 PM - tonmo: Hi folks - chat still exists, but I've removed the sidebar Chat modules to speed up page load times. I'll reinstate the sidebar for the next major live event. Meanwhile, we can still use this chat room to plan minor events (e.g., TV documentary), or anything else as applicable. And the archives will post daily as long as there's chat content to share. Like this message!

Aug 1, 2014 at 9:25 PM - Stavros: Hi, what's the size limit for uploading photos here? Thanks

@Stavros, not sure. I remember we had a few issues with upload memory size after switching servers but I don't know what end limit was established. I know it is greater than 64 MB. If you try to load a large image and it shows successfully uploaded but then does not show, this would be the symptom of an upload too large on the server side. If the software limit is exceeded, I believe it will give you an error message. If either case occurs, let me know the image size and I will see if I still have admin access as Tony may not be accessable for a bit.

I am not sure if you saw Tony's reply in the live chatroom so I am repeating it here:
if you are talking about Photos submitted to the forums, the limit is currently 20mb. For our Gallery, it *was* only 5mb, but I've just upped it to 20. Hoping that solves the issue!

Let me know if you are able to upload now. If not I will hunt up (or take) some larger images to figure out additional issues.
