Ugh, my heart... Misty was still for about 2hrs, getting smaller and pulling in on himself... crabs and other beasties were edging closer... and then he got up and did more laps... I cannot... ugh...

If you expect your aquatic pet to do something... but then it doesn't... you miiiiight have an octopus.

Close... but no cigar

At this point, if you have a breeder net or your critter keeper, you may want to place him in a protected environment (allowing him to escape if he wants). The failing skin attracts the cleanup crews early.

Still doing laps ...

Is this the endless need to sow his wild oats?

As I was typing he colored super strong, the fleck pattern in blacks instead of the whites or dull gray/brown.

Came home to find the pencil urchin wrapped in a leg. It is one of Misty's back legs, so it wasn't a sex thing.

He is still swimming and doing laps. Crawling around the sand and squeezing between rocks. Resting in or on top of the conch shell.
He does not stay put for longer than an hour or two.

Abdopus can drop their arms and we have seen this in the aquarium. Pencil urchins are notorious for grabbing and eating almost anything, including wood. I have had to swap mine from tank to tank because they get over interested in gorgonians or polyps in their tank. Oddly, this seems to work well. With a healthy animal, they are not usually a problem but in Misty's aged state, dropping the arm is likely his best defense.

Misty is taking his final breaths this morning...

We found the critters and brittle especially far too close to him yesterday.
For the week he flicked them off and moved, last night he was too weak finally.

RIP Misty

So sad when their time is up  It is with somewhat mixed emotion that I watch when they reach this state. Nature's cleanup crews are rather amazing but I just can't watch the natural end process. I place the octo in a suspended breeder net to let it die unmolested but, in truth, I don't believe they feel the invasion.
