A request by D for a layman's explanation of this article:

We take carbonate rock (limestone), crush it, measure the amount of carbon contained in it. The amount of carbon in the rocks is used to estimate the amount of carbon in the atmosphere during the time the rocks were deposited. Most atmospheric carbon at the Permian/Triassic boundary is thought to come from volcanism. Our study shows that some may have come from the way the sediment was deposited and/or how bacteria acted on it.
