[Octopus]: Baby Kraken!

Playtime!
I was just about to put Rotten Tiny Dog and myself to bed when i saw your notification pop up. I had to go see what little It was up to, and it was so worth it! If anyone thinks these guys are just swimming snails ( no one on this site !!! šŸ˜„ ), all they have to do is watch videos/movies especially my favorites, watching them and their human, and they will never make that mistake again. Such a delight to see. Thank you, as always. Hope your Mothers Day was great!!!

Thanks for your motivating words! The more positive comments I get, the more fun it makes this adventure for me! I had a great Motherā€™s Day with my daughters and my own Tiny Rotten Dogs- thoroughly spoiled by my husband and topped off with octopus playtime! I hope yours was just as wonderful!

Iā€™m constantly asked if I put food in jars or puzzles for my octopuses, because it is commonly thought that an octopus in an aquarium needs behavioral enrichment by means of artificial stimulation. My family and I are definitely under the impression that humans just like watching animals do human-like activities. While I find that providing a natural environment is stimulation enough, Baby Kraken and I decided to experiment with entertaining humans. We have started with a chunk of shrimp in a bottle with a wide opening. For a size reference, The bottle is 7 inches tall, the opening has a 2 inch diameter. Weā€™ve started a collection of unusually shaped bottles for future fun, with the plan of working our way towards narrower openings.

This is SUCH A COOL VIDEO!!! So much ā€œpassing cloudā€ display in this! I was lucky to get it!

Iā€™m so overdue in posting, Baby Kraken is such an amazing little animal! Sheā€™s beginning to come out earlier in the day and seems interested in whatā€™s going on in the room.
Sheā€™s starting to sit in my hand, not just try to pull it into the tank with her! Iā€™m feeling so incredibly lucky to get to live with her!!!

Another video to amuse humans- the bottle was in the tank fur a good 15+ minutes before sheā€™d approach it. She stuck around at the lip of the bottle to enjoy her shrimp longer than I thought she would- then she took a looong nap! šŸ¤£

Clearly I could take pictures of her all day long...

Baby Kraken has now trained me to feed her when she goes to her bottle. It doesnā€™t matter what bottle is in the tank, or where it is- she sits on it and I go get her some food. It doesnā€™t seem to matter if itā€™s raw golf shrimp defrosted from the freezer or live hermit crabs itā€™s just all about the food!!! šŸ¤£

I got a little behind on my journal entries, but I separated these into a separate journal from above because they illustrate the amount of arm regeneration baby Kraken has experienced since she got here. At first I couldnā€™t get a shot of regrowth because it was so very tiny. Soon, it will be difficult to tell that any part of that arm isnā€™t ā€œoriginal!ā€

Sometimes we get a little silly at my house. This was one of those timesā€¦ šŸ¤£. In truth, I have found over the years that frequently my octopus is like to watch the dogs running around in the living room. This was the first time we bother to find out what the Octopus thinks about the dog face-to-face. šŸ˜‚

Baby Kraken has now trained me to feed her when she goes to her bottle. It doesnā€™t matter what bottle is in the tank, or where it is- she sits on it and I go get her some food. šŸ˜‚. this is too funny. there aren't many animals that i can think of offhand other than a dog or some cats who train their humans to food reward them, basically for being adorable šŸ’• she looks so cute hanging out on her bottle waiting for her pretty nice but occasionally slow human to get the message. watch it though - if she starts tapping
the tip of an arm, like a finger, and giving you the "you just ate my boyfriend look ( she's much too young for a boyfriend !! ) , well you know she'way too smart for your own good. try to get it on video if it happens!?!? šŸ¤—

I donā€™t really have anything new to report on Baby Kraken, everything is status quo- thatā€™s a good thing! She continues to eat, play and grow as she should be. Sheā€™s comfortable with stick feeding raw shrimp and crab as well as free feeding on blue legged hermits. She lets me know when sheā€™s hungry by sitting in her jar when Iā€™m in the room- and it works! She goes in the jar, I get the shrimp- she has me trained well. She still hunts for pods, too- which is funny to watch as she grows so much larger than them.
