Are Powerheads Required?

Couldn't I just use an external pump with a high enough flowrate to split it into 4-5 seperate paths? This seems like it would supply adequate flow in the tank, without the hassle/hazard of powerheads in the water. Is there a reason that it shouldn't be set up this way?
