Octopuses don't need any form of lighting, however, too much bright light or not enough dark can seriously stress them. O. vulgaris is considered nocturnal and to observe any octo at night, a red light in a dark room works well to deceive the animal and allow observation (miserable for photography though). Our experience with tanked vulgaris as well as some recorded in situ observations suggests that they are often crepuscular (early morning and early evening hunters). There are other full daytime observations as well. Keeping a regular day/night cycle and feeding time is probably more important than how much light there is on the tank,
