Baby two-spot octopus (Octopus bimaculoides) showing off color change abilities & false eyespots

Actually, in looking at other bimac pics, I'm not so sure anymore whether those white spots are the ocelli... does anyone know at what point baby bimacs develop their false eyespots?

Wait... is there a chance I've misidentified him/her and that this is actually a red octopus, Octopus rubescens? (collected locally in San Diego, California by the way)

Yeah I think this is likely not a bimaculoides. They have a pretty distinct black and blue ring on either side of their webbing near their mantle. If your animal doesn't have these two markings then they aren't a bimac!

Ah, ok. Thanks! I was thinking that maybe since he/she is a baby, the spots aren’t fully developed yet... Are you familiar with O. rubescens? That’s my next guess!
